Dear Friends and Government of India,
I am writing to share a profound experience from my recent visit to Indonesia in September 2023. During this trip, I had the privilege of visiting a remarkable temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati. This temple, known as the Sambisari Temple, holds immense historical and cultural significance.
The story of its discovery is nothing short of fascinating. In July 1966, a farmer, while tilling his land in Karyowinangun, unearthed a piece of carved stone that turned out to be a part of the buried temple ruins. This discovery was swiftly reported to the Archaeology office in Prambanan, and the area was secured. Over the course of several years, painstaking excavation and reconstruction work took place, culminating in the temple's restoration in March 1987. The temple had been buried for centuries, concealed by the volcanic ash from the nearby Mount Merapi.
The unveiling of the Sambisari Temple was a momentous archaeological revelation in Yogyakarta, sparking speculation about the presence of other hidden ancient temples beneath the volcanic ash of Mount Merapi.
However, what struck me most during my exploration of these temples in Indonesia was a sobering realization. Many of these temples, once vibrant centers of worship, have now become little more than tourist attractions. The sacred idols within them often go unnoticed and uncared for. This observation prompts us to ponder the importance of preserving our rich cultural and religious heritage, not just within India but also wherever our culture has left its mark.
I fervently urge the Government of India to consider the establishment of a comprehensive system for the preservation and upkeep of our temples abroad. These temples represent not only our religious beliefs but also our enduring cultural legacy, transcending borders and boundaries.
Let us take inspiration from the discovery of the Sambisari Temple to cherish and protect our cultural heritage, no matter where it resides. Together, we can ensure that these sacred sites continue to be places of worship and reverence, rather than just historical relics.
